Sons and Lovers
Sons and Lovers was first published in 1913. It is
thought to be a ‘great’ book. Do you agree with this opinion? Say why/why not.
I disagree because I perceive this book is so simple, it emphasizes in many natural and common situations of the human life, which I consider are not attractive or impressive enough to read in a book of 600 pages. However this book shows us the Oedipus syndrome in Mrs. Morel as a shelter because of her unhappy life. So bad...!!
I think that the amount of pages of a book shouldn't be the matter, but the narration, the characters, the drama, the sequence of actions are the ones that catch the attention of the reader. So, I consider this book does not have neither of those because I did not fell in love with the characters and the narration was boring for me.
I do not like this book...I was especting a romantic story with a happy end. But, it was the opposite. Mrs. Morel was abused by her husband and she was obsessive with her sons. Her son William died and it was so sad for her!! In other hand; Paul was confused between Miriam and Clara and Mrs. Morel had a negative opinion of both. At the end, nobody was happy. And the book was boring for me!!
I don't like sons and lovers because the family in this book have a bad education in their life in which the father like to drink so much and his drink money away and is often violent and Gertrude is betterly unhappy another hand Paul is bad boy whit the girls and his mother is very gelous whit Mirian and clara beside his mother fell a apossesive love to him and he stayed alone forever
I think Paul does not deserve any woman hehe…he is a childish boy due to the fact that his mother should agree with everything he does, even with his relationships. If Mrs. Morel hated a girl who was into Paul, hence Paul should hate that girl as well :S Although, let’s suppose that Paul deserves the love of a woman. I consider it should be a mixture of Miriam and Clara. Why? Because Miriam takes care of Paul and she really loves him. However she does not have the passion as Clara does. So, whether Miriam had been more determined and less shy, she would have conquered Paul’s heart, hence he would start a new life along with her (adding some features of Clara).
I think Paul never found a perfect woman for him! the problem was that, he was completely in love of his mother(Mrs. Morel) she influenced in the emmotional life of his son, this influenced made that Paul be differente with both women. in the other hand, I consider that Miriam needed had been more passionate, but this is not a good excuse from Paul to leave her,(I hate the men of his class).
I think Paul is Gay...Hahaha!! He had a relationship with 2 beautiful girls. They love him with different characteristics, but love him!! The best partner for Paul should be how his mother. A prepotent, hateful and dominat woman. A girl who consents much and do everything. He wanted a maid...So stupid!!
What kind of woman do you think would be the best partner for Paul? Write a description of her.
I think paul is a bad boy whit both girlS when he know Mirian this boy only think about his mother and Mirian love him but paul dosen`t fell love Mirian Mrs for this reason. Morel does not approve of Miriam, and this may be the main reason that Paul does not marry her.then Paul know clara in another contry but this girl was married after she felt something for him but he never think her. Mirian is a serious person and she is nice and beautiful girl Clara is a married girl and she is a passionate girl.
hi,everybody i agree with the girls, paul didn`t know all what I expected love, cause I really was looking for a perfect woman according to him it, had to be like her mom. and well, i think that paul is a crazy man.
I really dont understand the problems between mr and mrs MoreL, she all the time felt disappointed of her marriage still, she said that love him! he just fighting with all the members of his family, well this situation depresses me! in the other hand mrs Gertrude express all her love for her sons, more for Paul than others!
I consider both Walter and Gertrude despise each other, but they couldn’t be apart as well. Even though, Mrs. Morel felt hatred toward her husband, when Walter was hurt she was worry and nursed him. Regarding to Mr. Morel, when he went out of the house because he could not stand his family, someway or the other he always returned. So, both of them had to put up with each other. I think that kind of situation occurs a lot nowadays, I mean, mothers that put up with men only because of their children hence they live the rest of their lives unhappily.
IF I think about their marriage, I would not like to spend the rest of my life being bitter, sad, unhappy....I would leave the man or kill him hehehehe :P nahhh.
So, Mrs Morel married this man in love. She didn't think in all the social problems around them, like money, education and social status. Over the years, Gertrude realized that and she wanted his children didn't commit the same error. By going against her husband. A consequence of that Mr. Morel and her didn't have a good relationship. Walter is a hard worker but he drinks so much because his wife excludes him. And he fight with Gertrude for that reason. I think, if they believed in their love above all, they would be a better couple!!
I regard as Morel´s marriage was very aggravated, because first of all, we must focus at the beginning of this pair, when they met their courtship was very short, and Mrs. Morel looked at him as a superman and she expected and imagined many wonderful things from him, that were frustrated after the wedding when no much time happened, and although they continued together, they did not try to solve their problems. That is way I think they should spend much time knowing each others, it was the root of the problems. Concerning to Mr. Morel it´s true he was a bad householder, but also it was as a result of Gertrude´s oblivion and the preferences unto her sons. In relation to Mrs. Morel; she was stubborn, capricious possessive mother, because of her unhappy life, that in my opinion it was the result of her bad decisions during her entire life.
Here, i found these verses from the bible. - Proverbs 27:15 says; a quarrelsome wife is like a constant dripping on a rainy day. *I wrote this referring to Mrs. Morel. Although this one: - Proverbs 17:1; Better a dry crust with peace and quiet than a house full of feasting, with strife.
